Overview

Ophthalmology ST1 uses the MSRA to rank applicants for an early selection gate, then verifies achievements and assesses shortlisted candidates online. For 2027, the initial shortlisting score is MSRA alone. Your unverified self-assessment no longer adds points to that score, although a minimum self-score is still required and verified evidence later determines progression and final rank. These are separate stages in the national selection process.

Choose one of the two Oriel adverts

The national recruiter says the 2027 round has two Oriel adverts: one covering England, Scotland and Northern Ireland, and another covering Wales. You may apply to one, not both. A live duplicate at the closing date risks the earlier application being withdrawn, so choose the location route you prefer and read the applying guidance before submission. This is a specialty-specific rule, not a statement about applying to different MSRA specialties.

Round 1 dates to plan around

Stage Published timing, UK local time
Oriel advert Check Oriel on 21–22 October; official pages conflict on advert timing
Applications open 22 October 2026, 10am
Applications close 19 November 2026, 4pm
Self-assessment and evidence upload 18 January–2 February 2027
Self-assessment feedback 25 February 2027
Interview invitations 15 March 2027
Virtual assessment 22–23 March 2027
Initial offers By 6 April 2027, 5pm

The official timetable says adverts will be published by 5pm on 21 October; the 2027 selection page says the two adverts appear when applications open on 22 October. These statements conflict, so check Oriel for the actual live adverts.

Source: Ophthalmology Round 1 timetable. The official selection page says MSRA booking invitations are sent through Oriel early in December, while the timetable labels 5–20 January as “Invitations to MSRA”. Because those descriptions do not align, this guide does not present either as a guaranteed booking or test date. Follow your own Oriel notification. The national 2027 sitting notice reserves February for GP and/or Core Psychiatry applicants; it does not promise an Ophthalmology applicant a February slot.

Eligibility before an MSRA invitation

Read the Ophthalmology ST1 2027 person specification in full. It requires an acceptable medical qualification, UK work eligibility, full GMC registration at application and a licence when the post starts, plus recent evidence of Foundation competence. The specialty experience limit is 30 months whole-time equivalent in Ophthalmology, including Medical Ophthalmology, by interview. Foundation modules are excluded; the applying page describes other exclusions that applicants should check against their own posts.

Eligibility checks can continue late in selection, so an MSRA invitation does not establish eligibility. The applying guidance says both 2024 and 2027 CREST forms may be accepted for 2027 if the form remains valid and meets the specialty requirements; this differs from O&G's current specialty instruction. The 2027 prioritisation guidance applies at interview and offer stages and should be read separately from assessment scoring.

What the MSRA does in 2027

The MSRA is mandatory. The national recruiter says previous-year or prior-round scores cannot be carried forward, and an applicant combining MSRA specialties sits the assessment once in the relevant process. For 2027, MSRA alone determines the first ranked list after the separate minimum self-score condition; it is not included in the final offer score. Selection process, scoring and offers.

This creates a practical two-track plan: prepare both MSRA papers to reach the evidence-review group, and prepare honest, well-organised proof for the achievements you claim. The public guidance does not give a fixed numerical MSRA mark that guarantees evidence review.

Self-score and evidence gates

The 2027 selection guidance and scoring page describe these stages:

  1. Submit both the self-assessment proforma with the evidence folder and the online scores form. Both are mandatory: failure to submit either means the application cannot progress. A self-score below 19 also prevents progression, regardless of MSRA performance. Selection process and supporting-evidence guidance.
  2. Candidates with self-scores of at least 19 are ranked by MSRA. The highest 350 enter evidence-folder verification.
  3. A panel produces a new ranking using the verified self-assessment score alone. A verified score below 20 cannot progress; the highest 260 verified scores are invited to virtual assessment.
  4. Candidates need at least 40% in the assessment to proceed to offers. Final rank combines up to 50 points for verified evidence and up to 50 for online assessment. MSRA does not add to this final total.

These are stage thresholds and capacity numbers, not MSRA cut-offs. The supporting-evidence guidance lists the domains and accepted proof. It also says achievements generally must be complete when evidence is uploaded, discourages unnecessary documents and prohibits patient-identifiable material. Build a simple index linking each claimed point to permitted evidence, and check the final official instructions before submission.

Virtual assessment and offers

The selection page describes two virtual consultations or role plays, each up to 10 minutes, with reading time beforehand. One focuses on clinical communication; the other on a difficult communication or ethical situation. Prepare to explain decisions clearly and safely under time pressure. Appointable candidates are ranked on verified evidence plus assessment, then considered for Oriel offers according to rank, priorities, preferences and vacancies. The 2027 change requiring self-scoring at application belongs to the 2028 round and is not a 2027 instruction.

A practical preparation plan

Start with NHS England's MSRA format guide and official practice paper. Practise Clinical Problem Solving and Professional Dilemmas separately, review mistakes and move to timed mixed sessions. In parallel, map each self-assessment domain to dated third-party proof, using the current ophthalmology scoring guidance rather than a previous-year checklist. Prepare and submit evidence to the portal on its published timetable regardless of when MSRA results arrive, and practise the two consultation stations; MSRA performance alone cannot complete this selection route.
