Priority affects offer matching, not your MSRA rank. A rank alone does not guarantee a post.

Overview

GP Specialty Training ST1 recruits nationally through the GP National Recruitment Office (GPNRO). You make one Oriel application for the standard GP ST1 programmes in participating UK regions, then list the programmes you would actually accept. The assessment and selection process uses the Multi-Specialty Recruitment Assessment (MSRA); there is no GP selection-centre interview for this route. Academic Clinical Fellowships and local initiatives are separate processes. GPNRO overview, national 2027 recruitment overview.

Check eligibility before you submit

Use the 2027 GP ST1 person specification as the authoritative checklist. Before submitting, confirm:

  • Acceptable medical qualification, UK work eligibility, full GMC registration at application and licence at the post start.
  • Recent Foundation competence evidence; a valid CREST if your route requires it.
  • GP-specific Medical Performers’ List eligibility and a driving licence or undertaking to use alternative transport for emergency and domiciliary care.
  • Any declaration or evidence needed for prior training, a regional move or reasonable adjustments. Check GPNRO eligibility and application guidance.

An MSRA invitation does not establish final eligibility. National prioritisation concerns offer matching; it is separate from eligibility and exam rank.

Apply on Oriel and build a realistic preference list

Before you submit

  • Complete every Oriel field, including employment history and supporting declarations, before the deadline. The application itself cannot generally be revised after submission; contact and referee details are exceptions. GPNRO application guidance.
  • Rank only programmes where you would actually train. A programme showing zero vacancies can still be worth preferencing if you would accept it; vacancies can change. A very short list can reduce your options.

After you apply

  • Keep contact details current and check Oriel messages directly. The preference guidance describes later changes, including during offers.
  • Do not treat an older published vacancy table as 2027 capacity.

How the 2027 MSRA works for GP

  • Invitation and sitting: eligible applicants are invited to take PD and CPS. January is open across participating specialties. February is reserved for GP and/or Psychiatry applicants, but may be oversubscribed; an allocated window cannot be changed. NHS England’s notice.
  • Book a real appointment: the published window is not your personal booking. Follow the Oriel invitation and Pearson instructions promptly. Use the official preparation and booking pages.
  • Score interpretation: current GP MSRA guidance says band 1 in either paper is unsuccessful. Its numerical score table is labelled 2026 Round 1, not a 2027 regional offer threshold. GPNRO does not publish the lowest rank to receive an offer.
  • Previous score or resit: at reapplication, declare whether you want an earlier successful recruitment score considered for transfer. A resit may be offered depending on application volume. This choice cannot be amended after submission; transfer is conditional, not guaranteed. Check the current GP rule and transfer conditions before deciding.

For paper format, see the Ultimate MSRA 2027 guide and NHS England’s exam structure.

Ranking, priority and offers

  • MSRA rank: the standard GP Round 1 route ranks by MSRA performance, without a scored portfolio or selection-centre interview.
  • Offer priority: GPNRO says priority status does not alter that rank. It is applied during each offer match, with priority applicants considered first in rank order.
  • Preferences: only posts you list can be matched; keep acceptable programmes on your list and use permitted updates.
  • Vacancies: a rank cannot promise a region or an offer when posts and preferences are limited.

Offers and response deadlines arrive through Oriel and GPNRO. Read hold and upgrade rules before responding. The Single Transferable Score route has no clearing phase.

A practical preparation and application plan

  1. Now: read the 2027 person specification, confirm Foundation evidence and any CREST/Performers’ List documents, and research regions. Save the Oriel deadline with UK local time.
  2. Before submitting: complete every employment-history field and supporting declaration; rank only genuinely acceptable programmes. Recheck Oriel after submission.
  3. Until the sitting: practise CPS and PD separately, review missed decisions and the official rationales, then use mixed timed sessions. Treat PD Ranking and Select 3 from 8 as different formats. Revise clinical breadth as well as weak areas.
  4. On invitation: follow the allocated testing window and booking instructions. If applying to another MSRA specialty, read that specialty’s separate shortlisting, score-transfer, portfolio and interview rules.
  5. After the exam: watch Oriel for results, preferences and offers. Do not plan a relocation around an assumed rank or historical score threshold.

PassTheMSRA’s free SJT teaching and QBank can support that plan. Read the MSRA 2027 guide for exam format and other specialty routes.

Fast answers

Can I choose a February sitting?
No. February is reserved for GP and/or Core Psychiatry applicants, but NHS England may allocate an eligible applicant to January.
Does one score guarantee a region?
No. Rank, eligible priority status, programme preferences and available posts affect the eventual offer.
