How MSRA affects selection

  1. Eligibility: check the 2027 person specification, including the 24-month whole-time-equivalent limit on prior Anaesthetics experience excluding Foundation modules.
  2. MSRA: eligible applicants sit in the January first window. When applicant numbers exceed interview capacity, the result can be used for shortlisting. The official weighting is 15% of the total selection score: 7.5% PD and 7.5% CPS.
  3. New minimum: from Round 1 2027, applicants must meet a minimum in each paper to be eligible for interview. The numeric value is not yet published. Meeting it still does not guarantee an invitation when capacity is limited; shortlist reserve is possible.

Scores from 2026 Round 1 or Round 3 are not transferable into this round. National prioritisation also applies at interview invitations and offers.

Interview and rank

Invited applicants attend one online interview in their chosen cluster. The official format has two 15-minute stations: Clinical Judgement and General Interview. The MSRA does not replace them. Read the free official domains and scoring guidance and the cluster rules before choosing preferences. Final appointment follows the scored selection and offer process, not MSRA alone.

How to prepare

Balance PD and CPS because each contributes 7.5% and each is subject to the new interview eligibility rule. Start with the official practice paper, review missed clinical decisions and PD reasoning, then use timed mixed practice. Separately read the free official interview guidance and keep the booking/declaration deadline visible. NHS England and the RCoA do not recommend buying commercial interview courses or advice books for this selection process.
