Key Points about Thyroid Cancer
- Definition: Thyroid cancer refers to malignancies arising from the thyroid gland, with the most common types being papillary, follicular, medullary, and anaplastic thyroid cancer.
- Causes: The exact cause of thyroid cancer is not always clear, but risk factors include radiation exposure, family history of thyroid disease, certain genetic conditions, and iodine deficiency.
- Symptoms: Common symptoms include a palpable thyroid nodule, neck swelling, voice changes, dysphagia, and sometimes pain in the throat or neck. In many cases, the disease may be asymptomatic and discovered incidentally.
- Investigations: Diagnosis is typically made with ultrasound imaging and fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) to assess the thyroid nodule. Blood tests for thyroid function and tumour markers such as calcitonin and thyroglobulin are also used in specific cases.
- Management: Treatment usually involves surgical resection (thyroidectomy) followed by radioactive iodine therapy in selected cases. Ongoing monitoring with serum thyroglobulin levels and imaging studies is essential for detecting recurrence.
- Complications: Complications can include metastasis to lymph nodes or distant sites, damage to the recurrent laryngeal nerve during surgery (causing voice changes), and hypoparathyroidism.
We encourage you to use these resources for optimal revision and explore other related topics for a thorough preparation.
