Key Points about Parkinson’s Disease:

  1. Definition: Parkinson’s Disease is a chronic, progressive neurodegenerative disorder that primarily affects movement. It is characterized by tremors, bradykinesia (slowness of movement), rigidity, and postural instability.
  2. Causes: The exact cause is unknown, but it is believed to result from a combination of genetic and environmental factors. The hallmark of the disease is the loss of dopamine-producing neurons in the substantia nigra region of the brain.
  3. Symptoms: Symptoms include resting tremor, slowness of movement, muscle stiffness, and balance problems. Non-motor symptoms, such as depression, sleep disturbances, and autonomic dysfunction, may also be present.
  4. Diagnosis: Diagnosis is clinical, based on the presence of key motor symptoms and a positive response to dopaminergic medications. Neuroimaging (e.g., MRI, DaTSCAN) may be used to rule out other conditions.
  5. Management: Management includes medication (e.g., levodopa, dopamine agonists, MAO-B inhibitors), physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and in some cases, deep brain stimulation (DBS) for advanced cases.
  6. Complications: Complications include motor fluctuations, dyskinesias, falls, cognitive impairment, and complications related to immobility, such as pneumonia and deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
