• Abnormal fluid accumulation in the pleural space, which occurs between the lung membranes (visceral pleura) and the chest cavity (parietal pleura)
• Causes include infection, inflammation, malignancy, heart failure, and liver disease
• Leads to respiratory symptoms and lung function impairment
