Key Points about Vitiligo
- Definition: Vitiligo is a chronic autoimmune disorder characterized by the destruction of melanocytes, leading to well-demarcated depigmented patches of skin.
- Causes: The exact cause is unknown, but it is believed to involve genetic factors and immune system dysregulation, which leads to the destruction of melanocytes.
- Symptoms: Vitiligo presents as well-defined, non-scaly, depigmented patches of skin that can affect any area of the body. The lesions are typically symmetrical and may progressively enlarge.
- Diagnosis: Diagnosis is clinical, based on the characteristic appearance of depigmented patches. A Wood’s lamp may help highlight areas of depigmentation. In some cases, a skin biopsy may be performed to rule out other conditions.
- Management: Treatment options include topical corticosteroids, calcineurin inhibitors, UV therapy, and depigmentation therapy for widespread cases. Cosmetic camouflage and psychological support are important for managing the psychosocial impact.
- Complications: Although not life-threatening, Vitiligo can lead to significant psychological distress due to its visible nature, especially when it affects prominent areas such as the face or hands.
