Key Points about Upper respiratory tract infections:

  • Definition: Upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs) are infections that affect the nasal passages, pharynx, and larynx. They are commonly caused by viruses, but bacterial infections can occur as secondary complications.
  • Causes: Viral infections such as rhinovirus, coronavirus, and influenza are the most common causes of URTIs. Less commonly, bacteria such as Streptococcus pyogenes can cause infections like pharyngitis.
  • Symptoms: Common symptoms include nasal congestion, sore throat, coughing, sneezing, and a runny nose. Fever, malaise, and headache may also be present in some cases.
  • Diagnosis: Diagnosis is usually clinical, based on the patient’s symptoms and history. Throat swabs and rapid antigen tests may be used to rule out bacterial causes like streptococcal infections.
  • Management: Most URTIs are self-limiting and do not require specific treatment. Symptomatic management includes analgesics, decongestants, and hydration. Antibiotics are only prescribed if a bacterial infection is confirmed.
  • Complications: Although rare, complications may include sinusitis, otitis media, and, in severe cases, lower respiratory tract infections such as pneumonia.
