Key Points about Sarcoidosis:
- Definition: Sarcoidosis is a multisystem inflammatory disease characterized by the formation of non-caseating granulomas, primarily affecting the lungs and lymph nodes but also other organs.
- Causes: The exact cause of Sarcoidosis is unknown, but it is believed to involve an abnormal immune response to environmental, infectious, or genetic factors.
- Symptoms: Common symptoms include persistent dry cough, shortness of breath, chest pain, and fatigue. Extrapulmonary manifestations can include skin lesions, eye inflammation, and lymphadenopathy.
- Diagnosis: Diagnosis typically involves a combination of clinical presentation, imaging studies (chest X-ray, CT scan), and biopsy of affected tissues showing non-caseating granulomas. Blood tests may show elevated serum ACE levels and hypercalcemia.
- Management: Management often includes corticosteroids as the first-line treatment to reduce inflammation. Immunosuppressive agents may be used in more severe cases, and regular monitoring is essential to manage complications.
- Complications: If not properly managed, complications include pulmonary fibrosis, organ failure, and potentially chronic Sarcoidosis with long-term impacts on quality of life.
