Key Points about Prostatitis:
- Definition: Prostatitis refers to the inflammation of the prostate gland, which can be acute or chronic, and is classified into bacterial or non-bacterial types. It is a common urological condition in men.
- Causes: Acute bacterial prostatitis is often caused by urinary tract infections, typically due to E. coli or other gram-negative bacteria. Chronic prostatitis can be caused by repeated infections or non-infectious inflammation.
- Symptoms: Symptoms include pelvic pain, urinary difficulties such as frequency, urgency, dysuria, and sometimes fever and chills in acute cases. In chronic cases, symptoms may be more subtle, with recurring pelvic discomfort.
- Diagnosis: Diagnosis is made through clinical examination, urinalysis, urine culture, and sometimes prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing. Imaging studies may be needed in recurrent cases.
- Management: Acute bacterial prostatitis is treated with antibiotics, hydration, and analgesics. Chronic cases may require prolonged antibiotics, alpha-blockers to relieve urinary symptoms, and supportive care.
- Complications: Untreated prostatitis can lead to abscess formation, chronic pelvic pain, and recurrent urinary tract infections. In severe cases, sepsis can occur.
