Key Points about Parotid gland swelling:
- Definition: Parotid gland swelling refers to enlargement of one or both parotid glands, which are the major salivary glands located near the jaw. Swelling can result from a variety of conditions, including infections, tumors, or autoimmune diseases.
- Causes: The most common causes of parotid swelling include infections (e.g., viral infections like mumps or bacterial infections), benign tumors (e.g., pleomorphic adenomas), malignancies (e.g., mucoepidermoid carcinoma), and autoimmune conditions such as Sjögren’s syndrome.
- Symptoms: Patients may present with a visible swelling in front of the ear and over the jaw, pain (especially when eating), dry mouth, or facial nerve weakness in cases involving malignancy. Systemic symptoms like fever and malaise may be present in infectious cases.
- Diagnosis: Diagnosis involves a thorough history and physical examination, including palpation of the gland. Imaging techniques such as ultrasound or MRI can help identify the underlying cause. Fine needle aspiration (FNA) or biopsy may be necessary to rule out malignancy.
- Management: Treatment depends on the underlying cause. Infections are typically treated with antibiotics if bacterial, or supportive care if viral. Surgical removal may be necessary for tumors. Autoimmune-related swelling is managed with medications aimed at controlling the underlying disease.
- Complications: If left untreated, parotid gland swelling can lead to complications such as abscess formation, chronic infection, or facial nerve palsy (especially in malignancies). Persistent swelling without timely diagnosis can also result in cosmetic deformities.
