  • Definition: Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disorder characterised by recurrent, unprovoked seizures due to abnormal electrical activity in the brain.
  • Causes:
    • Idiopathic in many cases.
    • Secondary causes include head trauma, brain tumours, stroke, and central nervous system infections.
  • Symptoms:
    • Recurrent seizures, which may be focal or generalised.
    • Aura (warning symptoms) preceding some seizures.
    • Postictal confusion or fatigue following a seizure.
  • Investigations:
    • Electroencephalogram (EEG) to detect abnormal brain activity.
    • Brain imaging (MRI/CT) to identify structural abnormalities.
    • Blood tests to rule out metabolic causes.
  • Management:
    • Antiepileptic medications (e.g., sodium valproate, lamotrigine).
    • Lifestyle modifications, including adequate sleep and avoiding seizure triggers.
    • Surgical intervention in refractory cases (e.g., temporal lobectomy).
  • Complications:
    • Risk of injury during seizures.
    • Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP).
