Key Points about Epididymitis
- Definition: Epididymitis refers to inflammation of the epididymis, the coiled tube located at the back of the testicle that stores and carries sperm.
- Causes: It is often caused by bacterial infections, including sexually transmitted infections (e.g., chlamydia, gonorrhea) in younger men. In older men, it can be related to urinary tract infections or prostatitis. Non-infectious causes include trauma or autoimmune disorders.
- Symptoms: The most common symptom is unilateral scrotal pain and swelling. Other symptoms may include dysuria, fever, and urethral discharge in cases associated with sexually transmitted infections.
- Diagnosis: Diagnosis is typically clinical, supported by urine analysis, urethral swabs, and scrotal ultrasound to rule out other conditions like testicular torsion.
- Management: Treatment depends on the underlying cause. Antibiotics are the mainstay of treatment for bacterial causes, with specific antibiotics targeting the suspected pathogen. Pain relief and scrotal elevation may also be recommended.
- Complications: If untreated, epididymitis can lead to abscess formation, chronic pain, and in rare cases, infertility.
We hope you find these resources helpful as you prepare for the MSRA. Be sure to explore other renal and urological topics for a comprehensive understanding of related conditions.
