Key Points about Nephrotic syndrome

Definition:
Nephrotic syndrome is a kidney disorder characterized by excessive protein loss in the urine (proteinuria), leading to low blood protein levels (hypoalbuminemia), high cholesterol levels (hyperlipidemia), and swelling (edema).

Causes:
– Minimal change disease
– Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis
– Membranous nephropathy
– Diabetic nephropathy
– Systemic lupus erythematosus

Symptoms:
– Generalized edema (especially around eyes, ankles, feet)
– Foamy urine due to proteinuria
– Weight gain from fluid retention
– Fatigue
– Loss of appetite

Diagnosis:
– Urinalysis showing proteinuria
– Blood tests indicating hypoalbuminemia and hyperlipidemia
– Kidney function tests
– Kidney biopsy to determine underlying cause

Management:
– Treat underlying cause
– Corticosteroids or immunosuppressants
– ACE inhibitors or ARBs to reduce proteinuria and control blood pressure
– Diuretics to manage edema
– Dietary modifications (low salt, low fat)

Complications:
– Increased risk of infections
– Thromboembolism (blood clots)
– Acute kidney injury
– Chronic kidney disease
– Cardiovascular disease due to hyperlipidemia
