Key Points about Coeliac Disease:

  • Definition: Coeliac Disease is an autoimmune condition where ingestion of gluten leads to small intestinal inflammation and villous atrophy, resulting in malabsorption.
  • Causes: Triggered by an immune response to gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye. It is associated with genetic predisposition, particularly HLA-DQ2 and HLA-DQ8.
  • Symptoms: Symptoms vary and may include diarrhoea, bloating, abdominal pain, fatigue, weight loss, iron-deficiency anaemia, and dermatitis herpetiformis. Some patients may be asymptomatic.
  • Diagnosis: Based on serological tests (tissue transglutaminase antibodies – tTG-IgA) and confirmatory small bowel biopsy showing villous atrophy. Genetic testing for HLA-DQ2 or HLA-DQ8 may support the diagnosis in uncertain cases.
  • Management: Lifelong adherence to a strict gluten-free diet. Nutritional supplements may be required to address deficiencies (e.g., iron, vitamin D, calcium). Regular follow-up is necessary to monitor symptom resolution and adherence to the diet.
  • Complications: Untreated or poorly managed Coeliac Disease can lead to complications such as osteoporosis, infertility, neurological disorders, and an increased risk of intestinal lymphoma.

We hope you find these MSRA revision resources helpful and engaging as you prepare for the MSRA.
